6 Signs Your Teenager Is Not Telling You the Truth

All young people, even good ones, lie about things to parents for a couple of reasons. But, especially they want more freedom and feel that they deserve to have it, they make mistakes that get them into trouble so they fib to try to get out of it and they want their privacy. Adolescents just don't think it's a big deal, on the other hand, parents usually take tall tales about these issues more seriously. It's a parental responsibility to teach boys and girls that this is a serious issue. But, how can you tell if your adolescent is not telling you the truth?

6 Signs Your Teen is Telling a Lie

Getting defensive and very unhappy when you check their story, is a sure sign that something is not quite right.

Avoids eye contact when they're relating a story or does the opposite and looks at you too long without blinking, this is an indication they are not being truthful.

Looking down when they're describing to you what happened, because they have to make up the story.

Touching their face and mouth is a type of body language that happens when someone is not being truthful.

There is always a pause before the answer when you're asking for details about what they're doing. This usually happens on the phone, but it can also happen face to face.

They either have well practiced details and change the story the second time they tell it or they avoid details altogether.

There is No Perfect Teen, They All Lie

After each of these signs, you should ask to check up on the story and see how the kid reacts. However, the faster parents get over the shock that their child will lie to them, the better they will be at being able to tell when their child is not stating the truth. Your teen will not be trying to hurt you by fibbing, so try not to take it personally.
