The Importance of Handling Teen Anger

By

In a home where a teen is quick to display anger, parents may fear for the own safety, as well as the safety of others living within the home.  For any parent attempting to cope with a troubled teen that demonstrates angry out bursts, overwhelming feelings of helplessness may cause a parent to feel like they are in no win situation. Teenagers may express anger through irrational and destructive behavior, sometimes resulting in the destruction of relationships and property, which can ultimately effect the teen's future..

Expressed anger is defined as: a display of emotions that easily progress into uncontrollable behavior. Anger is the expression of frustration when the teen doesn't fully understand how to deal with a difficult situation, or properly channel uncomfortable emotions. Anger management issues are often times the result of a lack of emotional restraint and poor coping skills. Teens may repress their anger and withdraw emotionally, which can result in an outburst of uncontrollable emotion at an unwarranted time.

Anger is a natural human emotion that can be demonstrated properly when emotional maturity allows it to be channeled in an appropriate manner. Anger is inappropriately displayed through behavior after uncomfortable circumstances such as feelings of being hurt, rejected, or abandoned, which then take hold of the teenage psyche. Essentially, anger can often times act as an indicator for something that the teen is feeling below the surface.

Anger within teenage boys and girls is not an inherent emotion within the teen's natural responses, but rather a practiced way of handling situations when the teen experiences frustration. When a teen displays angry behaviors such as verbal violence, prejudice attacks, malicious gossip, antisocial behavior, excessive sarcasm or other forms of negative responses, the teen is truly hurting and requires therapeutic assistance. If these negative coping expressions go untreated, it can result in tragic consequences that could have easily been avoided.
