Sober Living Homes for Adolescents and Young Adults

By

Sober living homes are affordable, alcohol and drug free environments that provide a positive place for peer group support used by teenage and young adult addicts recovering from substance abuse. Sober living homes grew out of a need to have safe and supportive place for troubled teens and troubled young adults to live while they were in recovery. They are primarily meant to provide housing for teens and young adults who have just come out of rehab or treatment of some kind and need a place to live that is structured and supporting for them while in recovery. However, it is not required that the teen or young adult come from rehab before entering a sober living home.

A typical sober living home is a single-family residence, duplex, or multiunit complex and are often times located in a quiet residential area. While residing at a sober living home the teenagers and/or young adults will be required to follow a strict set of house rules. The single most common rule in any sober living home is a zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol. Other zero tolerance rules include violence, threats of violence, fighting, harassment, theft, sex on the premises, and unexcused absence or violation of curfews. If any of the rules are not followed immediate disciplinary action will be taken and consequences will be given.

Transitioning Back into the Real World

Sober living homes pride themselves of holding the troubled teens and troubled young adults that reside within these homes accountable for their actions. For most troubled teens and young adults with serious drug or alcohol addiction histories, residing in a sober living home after the completion of drug treatment can be a great way to transition back into the community, and helps them to avoid the temptations that will ultimately cause them to relapse during the first months of post treatment abstinence.
