Eating Disorders

By

Troubled teenagers and young adults are sequentially expressing dissatisfaction with their bodies. This dissatisfaction often times leads to eating disorders in teens and young adults. Discussing the factors behind eating disorders in teens and young adults may be of service to the prevention of eating disorders.

Eating disorders are often times the result of continuously obsessing over thinness and discontentment with the way one looks. However, an eating disorder is dissimilar from just feeling fat when you aren't. An eating disorder is a destructive mental illness in which troubled teens and troubled young adults become so obsessed with their weight and body image that they compromise their health.

Bulimia is an eating disorder in which a person eats large amounts of food and then forces themselves to upchuck or uses laxatives in order to prevent weight gain. This is often referred to as bingeing and purging. Typically, a teen or young adult with bulimia is of average weight or vaguely overweight.

Another eating disorder among troubled teens and troubled young adults is known as anorexia nervosa. With this disorder, the sufferer is tremendously fearful of looking fat. A teen or young adult battling with anorexia nervosa typically avoids food entirely and loses weight excessively, but is in denial that they have a problem or are too thin. The teen or young adult may also binge and purge in a cycle almost identical to that of bulimia. For troubled teenage girls and troubled young women that struggle with this horrid disorder, menstruation often times stops.
