What You Need To Do When Your Son Is A Bully

Written by Craig Rogers, Posted on , in Section Teens & Tweens

As I set down my phone I felt dazed. I couldn't believe what I had just been told. The call had come from my son's school principal, telling my that my son had been severely harassing and bulling a boy. I was shocked, this didn't seem like the kind of behavior my son would engage in at all. As the details of what he had been doing came out, it became even more disturbing. My son had been physically and mentally harassing one of his peers to the point he was considering leaving school. If you are a parent that has found themselves in this situation, then please take my advice on how to stop this terrible behavior from continuing any further.Boarding-School-System-of-Learning-is-an-Exceptional-Catalyst.jpeg

Steps To Stop Your Child's Bullying

1 - Confront them about their actions - You need to be proactive about confronting anti-social behavior like bullying in your child. If you hesitate to take action to stop these actions, then it is likely that your son or daughter will continue down this dangerous path. What starts as bullying can quickly develop into even more serious problems. In addition, violence can have serious legal consequences and this needs to be made apparent to your child before they irreparably damage their future.

2 - Communicate why they are acting inappropriately - Discuss why bullying is a serious and damaging activity. Make sure that your son or daughter understands why they cannot continue to act out in this way. This can make a big difference as children and teens often don't consider the long-term results of their actions before making choices.

3 - Set clear consequences - Make sure that your child understands that you will not accept them continuing to bully their peers. Set up serious and meaningful consequences and don't hesitate to follow through. For more rebellious teens it can be difficult to reason with them and this may be the only way to stop their bullying.
