The Mission of American Association for Marriage and Family Therapists: Promoting the importance of marriage and family for the health of society by focusing on the rights of all committed couples to receive equal support and benefits.

The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) is the professional association for the field of marriage and family therapy. They represent the professional interests of more than 50,000 marriage and family therapists throughout the United States, Canada and abroad.

AAMFT believes that all couples who willingly commit themselves to each other, and their children, have a right to expect equal support and benefits in civil society. Thus, they affirm the right of all committed couples and their families to legally equal benefits, protection, and responsibility. Promoting the well-being of marital and family life through research, education, and special projects in marriage and family therapy, family policy and family science.

In their daily work with families, marriage and family therapists are acutely aware of the changing social trends and pressures affecting families and the impact of larger systems on family functioning and well-being. They also know from their practice that marriage and family therapy makes a positive difference in the lives of many families.
