Why Teenage Boys Abuse Alcohol

With teenage drinking on the rise, it’s normal for parents to wonder what factors lead some teenage boys to struggle with alcohol and what exactly they can do to help. As a young person, alcohol use can lead to a higher likelihood of addiction later in life, it can disrupt school work, and it can also have numerous other detrimental effects. As it is already statistically more likely for teenage boys to drink than it is for teenage girls, parents must be able to understand what leads their sons to struggle with alcohol and the most effective ways to intervene if this problem occurs.

Alcohol Abuse Is Incredibly Dangerous For Teen Boys

In many cases, teenage boys start drinking out of pure curiosity or boredom. If they have too much time on their hands they often turn to alcohol as a way to kill time and have fun. Getting your child involved in an extra-curricular activity can be a solution to this. However, alcohol abuse is more often caused by peer pressure. If your son falls into the wrong crowd, he may feel the need to drink to fit in and seem “cool”. Teens commonly believe drinking will help them become more accepted by their peers. This is why it’s so important for parents to be very aware of who their children are spending time with and to make sure that they are a good influence. For many other young men, alcohol is a means of escape and stress relief. When the pressures of school, friendships, family and many other stressors pile up, alcohol serves as an avenue for forgetting problems to some teens. Most young people don’t understand the implications of depending on alcohol for coping with their issues, so they continue to struggle with drinking.

It is never safe or smart for teenage boys to be drinking, so whatever the reason that they struggle with alcohol, it’s very important for parents to be able to communicate with their children about it and find solutions. If parents are ready and willing to intervene, it is possible to stop teen alcohol abuse.
