Group Therapy for Teens

Many therapists and adolescent clinicians will state that group therapy for teens is more efficient than individual therapy.  Group therapy, for adolescents, is the best approach to treatment for troubled adolescent behavior. The notion of "group therapy" is better for adolescents (more effective and productive) seems to be in conflict with the notion that adolescents will avoid revealing personal problems and issues to their peers.

The potential pain and humiliation (fear of rejection) are great for adolescents who are attempting to carve out their identity and ensure "acceptance" from their peers.  However, the facts point out that adolescents are far more willing, to be honest, and to share their personal experiences (struggles and problems) in a group than adults.

The effectiveness of Group Therapy with Adolescents

However, the effectiveness of group therapy with adolescents boils down to the effectiveness of the adult (professional) leading the group.  All too many therapists are intimidated and uncomfortable in a group setting, and prefer the individual therapy approach.  When looking for therapeutic help for your adolescent, please keep in mind that "group therapy" is more effective as a therapeutic approach for adolescents.
