Anxiety in Adolescents

Anxiety is experienced as unrealistic fear which causes physiological arousal, leading to avoidance and escape behaviors. Adolescents may find many ways to cope with anxiety helping them find healthy ways is essential. While some anxiety in adolescents may be normal, when it becomes excessive, and disabling it is important to get help.

Anxiety is helpful during exam’s when it helps one study harder. However when anxiety is seen as social avoidance, or as obsessive compulsive it is important to help to identify and help adolescents get help. Help adolescents with anxiety to maintain positive mental and emotional healty, and get outside help as needed.

Causes of Anxiety in Adolescents Chemical imbalances may be the cause of anxiety.

  • Be aware that substance abuse may be the cause of depression or anxiety.
  • Peer pressure
  • Rape, and teen pregnancy,
  • Poor school performance
  • Low self-esteem may be potential causes for anxiety

 Left untreated anxiety disorder may lead to a lack of productivity in school, reduce quality of life, or put teens at risk for drug abuse or suicide. Symptoms of anxiety in adolescence may be difficult to identify.  However 1 in 75 people are affected by anxiety the ages are between 15 and 25. There are many factors which lead to anxiety, life stressors, illness, and genetics, and over or under production of chemicals in the body. Adolescents are most likely to suffer from anxiety when their caregivers are also anxious. Educating adolescents and providing them with ways to manage anxiety instead of finding harmful or dangerous outlets is vital. Five possible ways to successful deal with anxiety are behavior therapy, cognitive –behavioral therapy, psychodynamic-psychotherapy drug therapy and biofeedback therapy.
