Young Adults Do Not Understand Their Own Mortality

"Let's see how fast we can go!" Justin said to me as we hopped on the back of his bullet bike. The bike was new and the road we were taking twisted and turned between beautiful red rock canyons. There was no thought or concern for helmets or consideration for the gravel that sometimes scattered across the pavement. Justin revved the engine and off we sped as fast as we could until we reached the end of the road. As an excited teenager, I asked him, "How fast did we go?" He replied, "A hundred and twenty miles per hour." The thought was exhilarating knowing my parents would kill me if they new and my friends would think it was totally awesome. The adrenaline rush was one of the greatest feelings I'd ever experienced. Teens often don't understand how close they come to the brink of death.
