Teens Pouring Alcohol Into Their Eyes: The Dangers Of Vodka Eyeballing

What is the most painful way you could possible imagine to ingest alcohol? If you said through your eye, then you’ve not only guessed correctly but also hit on the most recent disturbing drinking trend among teens. Vodka eyeballing is a recent trend in which teens will ingest vodka by pouring it into their eyes instead of drinking it. Because the eyeball has so many blood vessels, the vodka is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. This disturbing new trend seems to be taking the country be storm, with hundreds of videos of the activity having been uploaded on Youtube.

Why Would Anyone Use Alcohol This Way?

There are a few different potential explanations for this startling new trend. One of the most common reasons that teens give for this behavior is that it makes it more difficult to detect that they’ve been drinking when it can’t be smelled on their breath. Another potential explanation is the fact that alcohol ingested in this way enters the bloodstream directly and can get someone intoxicated much more quickly than drinking. Both of these reasons for doing vodka eyeballing stem from teenagers failing to understand the dangers of alcohol and how to consume it in a safe manner.

Is A Teen Who Does Vodka Eyeballing In Danger?

While vodka eyeballing is obviously a stupid way to get drunk, you might be asking yourself why this is a big deal? There are two primary reasons for parents to be worried about this trend. First, because when alcohol directly enters the blood stream it does so at much higher concentrations than when someone drinks it. This makes the dangers of overdrinking and alcohol poisoning much greater. This may seem troubling to parents, but the second danger is even more disturbing. Because alcohol is so damaging to the eyeball, repeatedly engaging in vodka eyeballing can cause scarring of the cornea. This can lead to permanent blindness in many cases. Despite this terrible risk, many hundreds of teens across the country continue to try vodka eyeballing. If you’re a parent, please talk to your kids about drinking responsibly and avoiding needlessly dangerous activities like this.
