Hospitals often use an IV for quick re-hydration. It turns out that this is an easy way to deal with the after effects of consuming alcohol. In extreme cases, hospitals use these to treat those who imbibe to excess. However, recently a certain breed of heavy partiers have started to embrace new applications for this treatment. Instead of using IV's to deal with alcohol poisoning and serious medical needs, these new companies offer them as a quick and easy way to deal with the results of a night on the town. They do come with a big price tag though, with house calls going for anywhere from 200 to 250 dollars. This may seem like an exorbitant amount to pay to quickly get rid of a hangover, but hundreds of people have embraced this service as a way to drink and party consequence free. Unfortunately, this consequence free drinking only encourages people consume more alcohol put their health at risk. So we must ask ourselves, as the use of IV's to cure hangovers grows in popularity and availability, will it have a widespread impact on the way people use alcohol?

Should Drinking Be Consequence Free?

One of the major concerns that the increasing popularity of IV use raises is the likelihood that it will encourage more regular drinking. When you have to wake up and face the day with a hangover, it makes you think twice about drinking as much the next day. At the very least, it encourages many people to limit their drinking to the weekends. With easy access to an IV in the morning, it could become much easier to fit drinking into a person's everyday life. Where in the past work and other obligations might have caused a person to limit their drinking, it may now become an everyday thing. The long-term health effects of this type of behavior could be staggering. In many countries where regular and excessive drinking is a larger part of the overall culture, alcohol related health issues are some of the leading causes of death.

Are These Services Encouraging People To Push It Too Far?

When considering whether these services are having a negative impact, it is also important to take into account the amount people will choose to drink when planning on paying for an IV the next day. In many cases, a person who has planned to spend a large amount of money on an IV won't just drink their normal amount. Instead, in a misguided attempt to get their money's worth they will likely drink much more than usual. This kind of extreme binge drinking is not only damaging in the long-term, it puts a person at much greater risk of alcohol poisoning. Even though these IV services are not yet widespread, there are already reports of deaths due to the intake of obscene amounts of alcohol by individuals planning to use these in the morning. With these incidents in mind, it is important for people to realize that IV use should not prompt ill-considered and irresponsible behavior.
