Losing My Patience: When Will My Young Adult Leave the House

In a small way, I always envisioned my children living close to me after they left the house, married, and had their own children. I wanted my role as a mother to continue and transition into being a doting grandmother. Although, I wanted my children close I also wanted them to move out of the house. Don't get me wrong, I love my young adults, but my fear that they are wasting valuable time has consumed me. Another semester will come and go and they don't have a life plan. My patience is wearing thin and has almost become greater than my desire to get them out of the house. I fear that in some way I have failed them as maybe I haven't given them the tools or the desire to do great things. Am I imposing my dreams on them or not approaching this correctly? I can't help but blame myself.

Finding A Happy Medium

Most of the time when a parent describes themselves as losing patience because their child won't leave the house, that's not what they're really frustrated about. Not leaving home is just a symptom of a deeper problem. Let's say they were living at home to save money, while attending Harvard and wanted to become a lawyer. If asked this, most moms and dads wouldn't have a patience issue. So the real fact of the matter is your frustration with your son or daughter's lack of goals and what they are not doing with their life. At The Crossroads we know how to find life goals that fit your child's desires and skill set. Not everyone is going to be a Harvard law student, but there is a happy medium.
