We’ve all heard that exercise is good for us, and know the many benefits behind it: Better endurance, weight loss, more strength, and overall fitness. But did you know that exercise is also incredible for your mental health?

Both adults and teens are known for struggling with their own emotional outlook, and researchers suggest that a mere twenty minutes a day can help to improve such dark moods immensely.

In an article titled, “What Happens To Our Brains When We Exercise and How It Makes Us Smarter,” it is noted that a simple twenty minutes a day of good cardio actually makes a huge difference on your emotions:

“If you start exercising, your brain recognizes this as a a moment of stress. As your heart pressure increases, the brain thinks you are either fighting the enemy or fleeing from it. To protect yourself and your brain from stress, you release a protein called BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor). This BDNF has a protective and also reparative element to your memory neurons and acts as a reset switch. That’s why we often feel so at ease and things are clear after exercising and eventually happy” (fastcompany.com).

Happiness For Everyone

BDNF is beneficial in balancing out moods and also increasing your productivity. It gives you that extra push that might be needed to get into the day. It will not only help you, but your teen son or daughter. Increased BDNF and other natural hormones will help your child throughout their busy day at school; it would help them focus more, stay awake, and maintain a positive attitude that will carry them far through any endeavor.

Lifestyles are busy, and it often seems as though there is no time for anything else. But, parents, this is important. Grab your teen and walk. Walk around the neighborhood, run through the nearby park, or even challenge your child to a hefty game of basketball. Not only will you raise the BDNF for both of you, but you will be spending quality time with your child, or children, and everyone involved will come away feeling better.
