Some people like it right after showering. Maybe you do it right as you wake up. Others wait until driving to work to do it. It is a worldwide multi-billion dollar industry. Drinking coffee is a staple in the morning routine of millions of Americans. Drinking coffee to provide a little extra energy in the morning is an accepted part of society, but are teens taking it too far?

How High?

Teenagers are always seeking the next thrill. It is no wonder that electronic cigarettes are so popular among teens, but a new method of getting high is gaining popularity. Similar to smoking cigarettes or marijuana, teens are starting to smoke coffee. Coffee is easily accessible and can be purchased from most stores without any age requirements.

This combination is proving dangerous among teens. Using rolling papers or small glass tubes, teens are smoking ground coffee in order to get a caffeine induced buzz. One user reported staying awake for 24 hours after smoking an amount equivalent to one cigarette. Teens report experiencing an amphetamine-like high, similar to smoking methamphetamine. This dangerous trend has the potential to become more and more popular among teens. Are these so-called ‘bean heads’ at any risk?

Bad Bean

Smoking any substance is bad for your health. Millions of dollars are spent every year advertising the risks associated with smoking tobacco, so it is easy to see that smoking coffee is a bad idea. Smoking coffee can cause dizziness, hallucinations, strokes, and may even cause cancer. The long term effects of smoking coffee have not been investigated so there may be additional problems that arise. Smoking coffee is always a bad idea. Teens are always looking for new ways to get high, so hopefully smoking coffee is not here to stay.
