It Is Time For Our Addicts To Come Out From The Shadows

Written by Craig Rogers, Posted on , in Section Teens & Tweens

One of the most difficult parts of helping addicts is getting them to seek out the treatment they need. Because addiction is a condition that carries so much social stigma, most individuals suffering from it will try to keep it secret. It is unfortunate that so many are successful, as it keeps them mired in their substance abuse and unable to improve their lives. Thousands of individuals are currently in this situation, in need of help but afraid to ask for it. If you are in this situation, please don't wait to seek out help. This is the only way you will be able to achieve long-term improvement to your life. Its Time for Addicts to Come Out of The Shadows

My Son's Battle With Addiction

Because he wasn't living with us and was able to maintain a seemingly normal life, it took almost three years for my wife and I to realize our son had a serious drug addiction. Our wake-up call came when we found out he was hospitalized for a drug overdose. We couldn't believe that this had happened to our son. He was responsible, had a good job, and seemed like a happy person. We had no idea that he had been dealing with depression and addiction for a long time. As he recovered, we talked to him and came to understand the how hard he had tried to hide is problem from us and everyone else in his life. He felt like admitting he had serious problems that needed help would disappoint us and his friends. We were lucky that he survived and we were able to get him help, but many families aren't as lucky. The only way to address this situation is to try to destigmatize addiction. If we can make people suffering from this terrible condition feel more comfortable about speaking up about their problems, then more will seek out the help they need to recover and live happier and healthier lives.
