Is Rule Of Law Still Important Or Is Wealth All That Matters?

Most Americans already understand how much of an influence wealth has over our society. Because we have embraced capitalism to such a high degree, many are completely comfortable with corporations and wealthy individuals having undue influence over things like elections and congressional agendas. However, if you asked the average American they would probably still say that the courts try to apply the law evenly. Unfortunately, a number of high profile court cases have started to suggest that this is no longer true. One of the most recent cases to attract national attention is that of a Texas teen named Ethan Couch. On a night out with friends, he chose to drive drunk and caused an accident which claimed the lives of several individuals. Stories like this aren't infrequent, but what caught the nation's attention was the remarkable leniency of his punishment, ostensibly due to his families great wealth.

Ethan Couch Will Not Answer For Actions That Would Put A Poor Person In Jail

In what can only be called an affront to justice and a slap in the face to every person who believes anything other than money matters in our society, the court was convinced by the legal team Ethan Couch's parents procured to ignore the prosecutions request for a 20 year sentence and ruled that his sentence would consist of an extremely expensive stay in a rehab facility in California and 10 years probation. If you still believe that we aren't living in a system where poor people fill prison cells for minor crimes while the rich face fines for the death and destruction they cause, ask yourself if you would be heading to California or the state penitentiary right now if you had made the same choices as Ethan Couch.
