Posted on , in Section Embracing Our Uniqueness

Hundreds of parents face this dilemma and are unsure what to do. Their teen doesn't want anything to do with them and it makes it much harder to keep them on the right track. Fortunately, in most situations there are some easy steps you can take to make a real connection with your teen and bring your family closer together. Try a few of these tips and you will be astounded at how fast your teen opens up.

Making A Connection With Troubled Teens

4 - Help with homework - A great way to keep your teen on the right track in school and spend some extra time together is to simply make an effort to help with their homework. Even if your teen is already doing well, see if there are some school projects you could get involved with.

3 - Go on a road trip - This is a great way to spend a few days together with no distractions. Go somewhere that you will both enjoy and take the time to have some more in-depth conversations. This can be a great way to start the process of deepening your connection with your teenager.

2 - Try a completely new hobby - One of the obstacles parents often encounter when trying to connect to their teenager is that they don't have very many interests in common. A great way around this is to simply try something that is completely new to both of you. Find something you can do together at least a couple times a month and get started. Their are hundreds of easy hobbies that could bring you and your teenager much closer.

1 - Eat dinner as a family - Everyone hears this advice constantly but unfortunately few actually put it into practice. It's easy to have your family scatter when dinner time rolls around, but this prevents you from having a set aside time when you can all discuss what is going on in your lives. Make a commitment to having dinner together one weeknights and you will be amazed how much of a difference it makes.
