Are Parents Underestimating the Impact of Cyberbullying?

Bullying is a problem that pervades every high school. Cyberbullying is a form of bullying that takes the abuse to entirely new level. Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place over electronic means (such as text messages, social media networks, chat, and websites). This type of bullying is harder to escape than normal bullying, as cyberbullying can take place at any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Cyberbullying also tends to be anonymous, so avoiding these types of attacks is difficult, and tracing the source is often impossible. Mt. Pleasant Academy is a residential treatment center that can offer help to students who are dealing with cyberbullying..

How Cyberbullying Can Impact Students and How Parents Should Pay Attention

Parents should know what their students are involved in and what their activities on the Internet entail. Cyberbullying can be just as hurtful, if not more, than normal, face to face bullying. Because of the vastness of the Internet, messages and pictures related to cyberbullying can be spread quickly. Cyberbullying, just like any other sort of bullying, can cause students to have lower self esteem, skip school, use alcohol and drugs, have poor grades, and other issues.

Cell phones and social media sites are not to blame for cyberbullying. These tools can be used for positive things, but when used for cyberbullying purposes, the effects are very similar to in person bullying. Because more and more teenagers grow up around the Internet and technology, cyberbullyinig is more and more common. Emotional immaturity mixed with these kinds of technology can cause negativity over these means to be much more common and pervasive. Always be aware of your student's activity online.
