What Does Our Persistent Obsession With Bigfoot Say About Us?

Comparatively, American’s aren’t all that superstitious. If you visit other places in the world, (some places in Turkey, for example, believe that chewing gum at night is the equivalent of eating rotting flesh) America seems pretty tame. But one tale keeps America on the mythical map, and that’s Bigfoot.

If you haven’t heard of Bigfoot don’t be too disappointed. Despite all the technology we have, nobody has been able to snap a crystal clear photo of the beast or provide definitive video evidence that the thing is real. But despite all this, people are super passionate about finding Bigfoot and there is a substantial amount of money to be had if you can somehow manage to be the one that captures him. There are entire groups dedicated to finding him, and even a few minor celebrities have partaken in the chase to find Bigfoot. Survival Expert Les Stroud claims to have had not one but two different “sasquatch experiences” and tells of them on the popular Joe Rogan Experience Podcast.

“I was out by a river and it was one of those quiet nights, and all of a sudden I can hear a large bipedal (a creature that walks on two legs) walking towards the tent. Now I know what a bear sounds like, and I know what a moose sounds like. I know those sounds. This was what I would describe a very large man walking in the forest. Is that a big deal? Well yeah! I mean there were no roads, nothing around us for who knows how many miles. Well I did what I normally would do with a bear and I wish I wouldn’t have, but I made a noise and the creature stopped walking, turned, and walked away a little faster than it came. That was experience number one. I was in day 5 or day 6 of filming Survivor man in Alaska, and I’m filming this scene where I’m cutting up some grass to make a bed. And in the scene, you see me kind of stop what i’m doing and look up towards a bush or something and then go back to what I’m doing. Well I do it three or four times, and I immediately think of a grizzly bear and it sounds like it’s about 50 feet away. Then I hear whatever this thing is start making some ape-like noises. I’ve never heard anything like that before in my life, except for maybe at the zoo at the great ape exhibit.”

Take from it what you will, but regardless it’s a fascinating story. But why are people so obsessed with finding this beast? Or any supernatural being for that matter? An anonymous blogger tells why he is so obsessed with these things. “Sasquatch experiences[...] forever change the way we perceive our world and the more times we see something outside the box, the more in tune we become with what’s going on around us.”

That statement almost gives it a zen-like feeling. Some people are set one becoming one with mother nature, and depending on how you want to acheive this feeling, just being out in nature is a great way to go. While finding bigfoot is as worthy of a hobby as any, don't get to put-out if you don't ever find him.
