8 Easy Activities For Parent Teen Bonding

It can be difficult for parents to find ways to bond with their teens. During the teenage years, it is normal for teens to seek more independence from their parents, but by using some of these ideas you can maintain a close relationship with your son or daughter.

1 - Music

It can be hard for parents to keep an open mind when listening to their kid's music, but if you try you can really open up a dialogue. In addition, this will give you the opportunity to expose your teen to some classics while you learn about what's popular today.

2 - Cooking

Your teen might not be interested in cooking at first, but try to encourage them to find some recipes that they would like to try. As your teen learns more about cooking, they will see that it can be fun. This is a particularly good activity for parents and teens, as it can help you and your teen become closer while you impart skills that can get them ready for college.

3 - Going on a road trip

This is an easy way to spend a lot of time together and really get to talk. Don't just hurry to your destination. Take the time to see some tourists attractions and make the trip really fun. If you and your teen have a good time, you can try to take short trips more often.

4 - Playing a sport

Even if you're not athletic, there are a number of different fun sports you can pick up quickly. Make sure you find one that your teen is interested in too, then sign up for a class. You and your teen can both have fun while getting some exercise, just make sure you don't make it to competitive.

5 - Going to the movies

Similar to music, many parents will feel that there is little overlap in taste between them and their teen. However, it is almost always possible to find some genre that you both exist. Once you do, try to go to the theater or rent a movie together a couple times a month.

6 - Playing an instrument

Talk to your teen and see if they have an instrument they've always wanted to learn to play. It's easy for most people to find person that offers lessons nearby, or you could get some home instructionals. Either way, you and your teen can spend a great deal of time together practicing.

7 - Reading

If you can get your teen interested in reading, you can both join a book club. As you read more of the same books, you'll have more to discuss. This can also be a great way to improve your teen's school performance. If they are more adept at reading, their grades are sure to rise.

8 - Home improvement

This is another activity that teens may be resistant to at first, but will often enjoy. Start with some small home repairs. If your teen seems to be enjoying what they are learning, try picking out a larger project together. In addition to providing valuable bonding time, you will be able to teach your son or daughter some important skills.
