21st Century Ideals

Written by Sedona Sky Academy, Posted on

Growing up as a child, in a very religious background, all I ever seemed to hear was how evil the world had become, and the degenerate way society is. Compared to, lets say 50 years ago, where the moral fiber of society could be graded by watching, Leave It to Beaver, and the Andy Griffith Show. Stores weren’t open on Sunday; neighbors knew one another, and brought house warming gifts to the new family in the neighborhood. There was a sense of a personalized social network, where the relationship that held society together was based on physical interactions. It seemed as though life 50 years ago was the picture of civil perfection.

From the other side of the spectrum, there is my great uncle Bill. 50 years ago, my dad would have been 7 years old, my uncle would have been 40. My uncle tells things from his point of view, saying that the fifties and sixties were not so enlightened, and chaste as some might like to believe. MC’s (motorcycle clubs) terrorizing the town he lived in, running drugs, prostitutes, etc. and he explained that lovers lane wasn’t just a lane where you sat in your car and enjoyed a view. To a certain extent, he explained, things have gotten worse and better.

If we really think about it, society, as a whole, has gotten a lot better. There are so many programs that are publicly funded to help get people a head start in life. Much of how we lived and started to live in the fifties has had a huge impact on the way we live today. Many of the ideas and charities we have today were started when society began to notice a void, or a need help one another. These ideas have formed over centuries of thought and self awareness that have allowed people to actually care about one another.

The social well being that we as a nation and as a world have built, of individual races and cultures, seems to be boundless as we help one another succeed. People in rich and prosperous countries extend helpful hands to those in third world countries and beyond.

Still, The World Is Far From Perfect

There is so much hate and violence that goes on every day. We see it constantly on our news feed, Facebook walls, and TV. It seems with a world so stuck in the middle between good and evil, with the eye of the media fixated on the bad, the feeling of draught can be overwhelming.

The world is changing, and as people take on the persona of a more brotherhood-like community, we can expect to see the world continually progress to a friendlier, more peaceful environment.
